The technology
UV-Clear™ is an in-duct UV-C LED system. A dense array of UV-C LEDs is mounted on a heat-sink platform that sits inside the HVAC duct; a controller plate closes the six-inch opening it installs through, and the unit draws from the low-voltage power already running the air handler.

As air passes the array, it's dosed with UV-C and the pathogens in it are inactivated, continuously. With no occupant exposure.

What makes it possible is a thermal problem most people never see. Every UV-C LED runs hot, and heat is the enemy of semiconductors. The more chips you pack in, the more heat they throw, and the faster they burn out. That's the reason a UV-C LED array dense enough to treat fast-moving air wasn't commercially viable until now.
UV-Clear™'s core invention is a passive cooling approach that uses the moving air itself to carry heat off the array. No fans, no liquid loop, no added energy draw. That approach is what the issued U.S. patent protects.

Mercury UV-C tube lights operate at roughly 30% efficiency. Meaning about 70% of the energy going in is wasted as heat.
They radiate low-intensity UVC light in 360 degrees, so even the UV-C they do produce is largely wasted on the walls of the duct rather than directed into the airstream. Every replacement cycle means downtime, labor, and toxic mercury disposal.
Nichia's own engineers have described directional LED emission as "a massive advantage" over omnidirectional mercury sources. Because every time light has to be redirected toward a target, losses occur. In a duct, those losses compound.
